THE EARTH REMEMBERS:
Reflections on the Holocaust, Gas Drilling and Haudenosaunee

Solo Exhibition by PAMELA ROZELLE DRIX
April 30 - June 6, 2010

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, May 1st
5-8 pm

(Check for images under Galleries. The images for the entire exhibition are online.)

The Main Street Gallery is honored to present this timely solo exhibition of printsby Pamela Rozelle Drix entitled The Earth Remembers: Refections on the Holocaust, Gas Drilling and the Haudenosaunee from April 30 - June 6, 2010.

As Pamela Rozelle Drix says in her own words, "The Earth Remembers: Reflections on the Holocaust, Gas Drilling, and the Haudenosaunee focuses on the role of historic memory and how our activities impact the sense of place.  Unique historic events, whether of the Holocaust or the devastation of the American Indian way of life during the Revolutionary War, which are rich in metaphor and visual material, provide points of reference to begin understanding our role as gatekeepers and stewards of the land.   Through my travels and research I find what is left behind -- a record often missing key elements, but which nonetheless reveal profound truths. The earth inherits the results of our activities, for good or bad.  This series of prints question and reveal some of the impact of our actions, and hopefully help begin a dialog about how we might create a better world for everyone."

Drix has a MA in Studio Art from State University of New York Oswego. She is a Co-Founder and on the Board of Directors, of the Ink Shop Printmaking Center and Olive Branch Press, Ithaca, NY having served as President and currently serving as Treasurer. Drix is also an Adjunct Professor at Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY, where she teaches Introduction to Printmaking, Relief and Intaglio. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

This print exhibition by Pamela Rozelle Drix is not to be missed  and should provide a meaningful discourse on our actions of the land  past, present and future.

Cadenza
Mixed Media on Paper

April 30 - June 7, 2009

Opening Reception
Saturday, May 2nd
5-8 pm

"Congratulations on having such a beautiful show. I've seen some elements of the work Syau-Cheng will display there and it is a major artistic accomplishment."    Buzz Spector

Syau-Cheng Lai will be displaying in the front section of the gallery her large scrolled mixed-media drawings/paintings. The space of The Main Street Gallery lends itself to this installation of lyrical compositions. Cadenza in musical terms "is an improvised or written-out ornamental passage played or sung by soloist or soloists, usually in a "free" rhythmic style and often allowing for virtuosic display." This is exactly what Lai   conveys with the pieces in the exhibition.

Syau-Cheng Lai is interested in formal composition and the articulation of textures. There are fields, lines, volumes and spaces in each painting. She pays close attention to how they play with each other, how they relate and what sort of organization they create as a whole painting/drawing.  Each painting  expresses a combination of movements, phrases and voices, as in a piece of music. Within Lai's work there is a feeling of space and structure as if watching an evening-long dance performance.

Syau-Cheng Lai does not want her art work to be taken under full view at once. As the visual field needs to expand, so must the length of paper. The drawings on long paper express varied sensuous moods, which engage, relax and evolve with time. The events are sequential. As Lai says " I always draw from left to right, and I hardly look back".

Lai does not  make a painting  to tell a story. Her work reveals a juxtaposition of her dreams and memories which is both ambiguous and concrete - a poetic geometry that transcends the material.

Originally from Taiwan, Lai has lived in Ithaca since the early 1990s. She has a PhD in Biopsychology from Cornell University. As well as being a visual artist Syau-Cheng Lai is a staff musician (piano) in the Dance Program, Cornell and a teaching associate in Mandarin Language Program, Cornell. She has been a recipient of various grants and awards  for her artwork including the prestigious 2002 Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts Individual Artist Grant.

2009 SPRING GROUP EXHIBITION
March 19 - April 26, 2009

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, March 21st
5-8 pm

(Images of the exhibition are shown in its entirety. Go to Galleries and click on Current Show for images.)

The Main Street Gallery is proud to present its seventh season with its annual Spring Group Exhibition.  The gallery stands by its commitment to bring contemporary art to the Main Street in an intimate setting. This invitational show celebrates and highlights the wealth and talent of local and regional artists. Diversity of media, styles and subject matter are always a hallmark of the Spring Group Exhibition and this year is no exception.

The eighteen artists invited to participate in this year's Spring Goup Exhibition are: Ceramics - Jeremiah Donovan; Painting - Laura Glenn, Paul Kline, Syau-Cheng Lai, Wendy Menzie, Chris Nau, Crista Pisano and Adrienne Bea Smith; Photography - Nicolai Klimaszewski, Harry Littell and Kathleen Rugh; Prints - Pamela Rozelle Drix, Kumi Korf and Christa Wolf; Sculpture  -  Mary Giehl, Gail Hoffman, Victoria Romanoff and Roger Smith.

Groton's own Jeremiah Donovan will be exhibiting his organic studio ceramics. Local artist Pamela Rozelle Drix's gum transfer and monoprint image "Wolf Pelt" from her Haudenosaunee Project has an iconic spiritual quality. From Syracuse, Mary Giehl's soft sculpture "Red" appears to be multiplying in an unworldly manner. Laura Glenn (Ithaca) will be exhibiting her all over watercolor and ink compositions with an eastern influence.

Gail Hoffman (Syracuse) will be exhibiting her surreal and dreamlike narrative bronze sculpture "The Bell Didn't Ring". Nicolai Klimasjewski (Groton) will be showing his always exceptional photographs. Paul Kline (Hartford, CT) will be exhibiting his encaustic painting "Awareness" to bring a greater awareness of breast cancer.  The intaglio prints "Thaw" and "Moonlight, Snow Depth and Deer Tracts" by Kumi Korf (Ithaca) are subtle gestural marks of the winter/spring weather.

Syau-Cheng Lai's mixed media paintings called "Sinbab" and "Haboob" are lyrical movements which seem weather beaten and mythical in nature. Harry Littell's photographs are a reflection on the artist's daily walks in Six Mile Creek. Wendy Menzie (Rochester) will be exhibiting an oil painting which will delight with its narrative using humor and expressive color.  Chris Nau's oil on panel paintings are coded representations of structured abstract anomolies which appear to be either flying or swimming.

Crista Pisano will be exhibiting her en plein air landscape oil paintings on panel which show the artist's light touch. Victoria Romanoff's recycled wood sculpture "Banal Double Feature at the Mount Olympus Drive In" brings out the irony of life and politics in front of our very eyes. Kathleen Rugh's photographs act as a visual diary and center around the psychological effects of the spaces we inhabit. Adrienne Bea Smith (Groton)  will be presenting her "Living Space Series" which are oils on solid alder wood.

A maple carved sculpture "The Messenger" will be exhibited by Roger Smith (Groton). "Satterly Hill #2", a monotype by Christa Wolf offers an expressionist view of the artist's back yard.

The Main Street Gallery invites the public to enjoy the Spring Group Exhibition and savor the creative spirit of the artists who live amongst us.

Monotypes by CHRISTA WOLF

September 5 - October 19, 2008

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, September 6
5 - 8 pm

Christa Wolf finds inspiration from her current living place: a farmstead with vineyards in Upstate New York. The monotypes* also show influences from her German birthplace.

Wolf uses monotypes to explore experiences that tie together personal and public memory. Her work is a personal account of nature abstracted and is vibrant and energetic in its movement and gesture.

Christa Wolf now lives in Burdett, New York. She studied art and printmaking in Berlin, Germany and at The School of Architecture, Art and Planning at Cornell. Her work, including installations and artist books, has been shown nationally and internationally. Wolf is a founder member and President of the Board of Directors of The Inkshop Printmaking Center & Olive Branch Press, Ithaca, New York.

*"Monotyping is not a new art form, and many examples of works done on copper exist from earlier periods. Monotyping is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface - usually in more modern times this includes zinc, glass or acrylic glass - and then transferring the work onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together, usually with a printing press. Another way monotypes can be made is to ink an entire surface and then use brushes or rags to remove the ink to create an image which is something like, yet changed from, the original. Inks used are usually oil or water based." Paragraph from Dolores Hemming article "Groton Town Talk, Ithaca Journal"

OPENING RECEPTION

GO GREEN INSTALLATION

A section of the gallery has been allocated to show an installation where one message is heard "Go Green". The aim of the show is to let the public worldwide voice their concerns about the environment. Artists and general public worldwide participated by sending in handwritten or typed words in any language about the environment on preferably recycled paper no larger than 8.5" x 11" ((22 cm  x  28 cm).

Please inquire at desk, if you wish to add your own comments to the installation project. It is hoped that this show will grow as it travels to different venues where people will express their concerns and call attention to this extremely important issue.

STRANGE WORLDS

The Main Street Gallery also will be extending "Strange Worlds" an exhibition of new photographs by Harry Littell, Kent Loeffler and Dede Hatch where the artists explore and transform the world close at hand in order to better understand it.

In the "Almost Gone" digital photography series, Harry Littell finds a visceral beauty in the refuse of society, as seen at the Reamer Recycling scrap-metal salvage yard. Sifting through the layered fragments of consumer and industrial waste, he creates images that speak to the concerns of the environment, entropy and renewal.

In the "Pinhole Worlds" series, Kent Loeffler creates his images using a collection of primitive homemade pinhole cameras, 4" x 5" PVC pipe camera, 8" x 10" developing drum camera and 4" x 5" field view camera. These cameras create an alternate reality where geometry, time and space exist quite differently than we experience with our eyes.

In the "Violet" Series, Dede Hatch photographs her dog with an eye of a painter. Se thinks Violet as a continent, with varying landscapes that invite exploration; or a garden with endless nuances of texture and light; or a giant paintbrush capable of creating her own exquisite works of color.

These three distinguished fine art photographers are all based in Ithaca, NY. Harry Littell is an adjunct instructor at Tompkins Cortland Community College. He has had numerous awards and exhibitions and has been published in the prestigious Smithsonian magazine as well as co-author to several books. With his expertise in biomedical photography, Kent Loeffler is currently running the Cornell Plant Pathology Photo Lab since 1985. He has had an array of exhibitions and awards. As a professional photographer, Dede Hatch has worked for numerous educational institutions, as well as having works published and exhibited. She has been a Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts Trustee from 1995-2007.

This exhibition will be shown online in its entirety. If you wish to purchase any artwork in this exhibition and elsewhere on this site, please email the gallery at maingal@localnet.com Please check on our purchasing information page for details on pricing, shipping, handling and return policy.

Opening Reception
Saturday, March 15th
5-8 pm

(For all images in the exhibition, please go to Galleries and click on Current Exhibition)

The Main Street Gallery is proud to open its sixth season with its annual Spring Group Exhibition.

The gallery stands by its commitment to bring contemporary art to the Main Street. The twenty artists invited to participate in this seasons Spring Group Exhibition are Jeremiah Donovan, Pamela Rozelle Drix, Anna Velkoff Freeman, Mary Giehl, Claire Harootunian, Gail Hoffman, Nicolai Klimaszewski, Paul Kline, Kumi Korf, Harry Littell, Marie McCann-Barab Wendy Menzie, Crista Pisano, Lin Price, Flora Rocco, Victoria Romanoff, Adrienne Bea Smith, Roger Smith, Buzz Spector and Christa Wolf.

Groton's own Jeremiah Donovan will show ceramics from his walnut series which evolved from his fascination with nature. Local artist Pamela Rozelle Drix's monoprint and gum transfer print "Native Dance" embraces the dichotomy of past and present in landscape in one image, finding what is universal in the particular. From Norfolk VA, Anna Velkoff Freeman's food safe ceramic cups and bowls depict germs of mass destruction.

Mary Giehl from Syracuse will show her cast bronze children's shoes influenced by her work experience as a registered Pediatric Nurse.  Also from Syracuse, Claire Harootunian will exhibit dolls that are clothed in the artist's vision. Gail Hoffman's bronze sculpture "Messenger" gives a contemporary view to mythology. Nicolai Klimaszewski (Groton) will show his uniquely executed digital photography. From West Hartford CT, Paul Kline will exhibit a triptych called "Into the Light" using encaustic as a medium. An Ithaca artist Kumi Korf will show "Birds Conversation" a gestural Intaglio print on Japanese paper.

Another Ithaca artist, Harry Littell will show digital photographs which are abstracted views from a local salvage yard. You will marvel at the egg tempera painting technique of artist Marie McCann Barab (West Plains, NY). The Rochester area artist Wendy Menzie will delight us with her painting narrative using humor and expressive color. From Nyack NY, Crista Pisano brings back the art of en plein air landscape painting with warmth, passion and an understanding of traditional technique. Local artist Lin Price will show paintings which combine common things like crows, insects, rocks etc. with a more abstract notion of painting using layers of waxy flat colors.

Flora Rocco (Astoria, NY) will exhibit a digital photograph of a dessert case of many pleasures. Victoria Romanoff's paper mosaic will add a bit of whimsy and sensual pleasures. Adrienne Bea Smith's abstract painting in oil "Living Space 6" investigates the relationship between objects, space, movement and color.  Roger Smith will show his whimsical recycled sculpture. Buzz Spector's large Polaroid transfer print "Creeley's Creeleys" memorializes the American poet Robert Creeley. Local artist Christa Wolf will be exhibiting her expressive monoprint of her local Upstate surroundings.

The Main Street Gallery will show all the works of the exhibition online, but we encourage you to see the works in person.

Each exhibition will be shown online in its entirety. If you wish to purchase any artwork in this exhibition and elsewhere on this site, please email the gallery at maingal@localnet.com Please check on our purchasing information page for details on pricing, shipping, handling and return policy.

The artists participating are:
Roger Cannon (CA), Stu Eichel (NY), Martha Ferris (MS), Laura Glenn (NY), Vanessa Irzyk (MA), Linda Pearlman Karlsberg (MA), Yongjeong Kim (NY), Paul Kline (CT), Karen Kluglein (NY), Joan Lesikin (NY), Damon McArthur (IL), Margaret Olney McBride (NY), Marie McCann-Barab (NY), John McLaughlin (MI), Joseph Morzuch (TX), Nanette A Olson (UT), Philip J. Palmieri (NY), Erik Petersen (MA), Erica Pollock (NY), Jerry Schutte (AZ), Melissa Smith (TX), Sue Wall (NY) and Stephanie Warburg (MA).

"Viola" painted with egg tempera by Marie McCann-Barab (White Plains, NY) visually conveys music with its lyrical composition and makes you want to sway to the rhythm. Yongjeong Kim's acrylic painting "My Map 14850 - III" gives a visual aerial map of the artist's surroundings in Ithaca and makes for an interesting abstraction of one's turf. In "Oscar's Watch" by Karen Kluglein (East Hampton, NY), you will be amazed by the fine rendering and realism of this still life in watercolor.

Mentioned above are but a few of the fine art paintings you can enjoy for the last exhibition of the season at The Main Street Gallery. You will be able to glance at all the images of this exhibition online, but of course, there is nothing like the real thing.

PAINTINGS by KUMI KORF

September 7 - October 21, 2007

In recent years, Kumi Korf is primarily known as a printmaker. This exhibition will be a departure from printmaking by focusing on her painting works. Two large gestural acrylic canvases will fill the main section of the gallery. These large scale paintings in the intimate setting of the gallery will offer viewers a different experience. One of these pieces, “An Amphora and A Fish - painting”, created in collaboration with Kumi’s granddaughter Maïa Vidal, was influenced by a story written by Korf herself. An amphora (Greek vase) fell into the vast seas attracting a fish. The two formed a relationship with one another. Eventually, the amphora metamorphosed into a fish. Kumi Korf compares this story to the act and process of creating art, constantly changing and recreating form.

Two series of smaller works will also be shown in the back section of the gallery. One series are pastel works inspired by nature and landscape around Ithaca. A more recent second series are works in oil pigment sticks. Kumi Korf’s works show a lifelong inspiration from the abstract expressionists.

Kumi Korf is a well known Ithaca artist holding a BA in Architecture from Tokyo University of Fine Art and a MFA from Cornell University. Collections of her works can be seen in Victoria and Albert Museum Special Collections, Tate Library, Herbert F Johnson Museum of Art-Cornell University, Library of Congress, Harvard University Houghton Library, and the Getty Research Institute.

Soul Lifting Stars by Victoria Romanoff       The Veterans by Victoria Romanoff        Berlin Opernplatz by Victoria Romanoff

AT DIFFERENT TIMES
Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture by

VICTORIA ROMANOFF
April 27 - June 3, 2007

Eight large expressive acrylic paintings on paper from Victoria Romanoff's "War Series" will be exhibited at The Main Street Gallery. This series was painted at the outbreak of the Iraq War in 2003 in a period of 30 days. Romanoff's own World War II memories swelled up inside her at the sight of this newly imposed violence. Now, four years on, with the war continuing in Iraq, these paintings are a contemporary statement on the tragedy of war. As Romanoff says "The imagery has been part of my psyche for over 60 years, and even though I did not experience the Holocaust personally the knowledge of it has haunted me relentlessly." From 1944 to 1953, Romanoff had in fact lived as a child in Germany experiencing the occupational forces rolling in, the downfall of Germany and the aftermath of World War II.

On a lighter note, her "nearly new" sculptures assembled from recycled elements are absurdly humorous, but thought provokingly wise.

Last by not least, her vintage expressive drawings of the 1960s capture her European roots and call to mind drawings of the German Expressionists.

Victoria Romanoff was born in Riga, Latvia immigrating to the USA in 1954. She is a well known Ithacan artist who has worked and served in the Ithaca community since the 1960s. She has a MFA from the College of Art and Architecture from Cornell University. Romanoff is a Senior Partner for V. Romanoff & Associates (Restoration and Design Consultants), Ithaca, NY as well as a founder member of the Saltonstall Foundation.

                                                  A MOMENT IN TIME

2D Works and Sculpture by Mary Giehl

Mary Giehl's work has taken on themes that she has encountered through her work experience as a Registered Nurse in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.  She had often cared for children after they had been abused, much of her work focuses around this theme. There are hints of darkness and confinement in her work along with a mixture and balance of playfulness and seriousness.

Giehl's work participates in a discussion that analyzes and disentangles specific images of our culture about our children. "A Moment in Time" is using children's clothing that has used encaustic for the first layer then there are 20 layers of Elmer's glue to give a skin, a protection over the clothing.  Each piece represents an individual child.  The color palate has a beauty to it but also is the color of abrasions and black and blue marks.  This is not evident in the work directly.

The artist has made the decision that her work would not offer that escape into an aesthetic discussion, intellectual diversion, imaginative fantasy, or simple entertainment.  She is interested in creating works that educates, agitates and troubles the audience.  It is important to captivate the audience to have them bond with the work to create that lasting memory.

Mary Giehl is an Assistant Professor in Sculpture and Fiber Art/Material Studies at Syracuse University. She has a MFA in Sculpture from Syracuse University as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.  Giehl has numerous awards e.g. a Development Grant from Syracuse University,  Everson Museum  and the Constance Salstonstall Foundation for the Arts Grant. She has been exhibited and  reviewed extensively. Most recently she has had exhibitions at the Everson Museum in Syracuse and the Schweinfurth  Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY.
